To review two Wall Street Journal articles about this program, visit March 2006 - Financial Infidelity: When It's OK to Shop Behind Your Spouse's Back September 2003 - Money Hang-Ups Come From Your Upbringing For many people, current problematic or confusing money issues such as overspending, hoarding, family discord, entitlement, "thinking poor", debting, inability to receive, save, or follow through on good financial plans, and similar issues often have historic ties to innocent beliefs and feelings from our past. This 5 1/2-day program is designed to allow participants the opportunity to examine the life experiences that have shaped their current relationship with money as well as process feelings and behaviors that are attached to these beliefs. In this program, all participants will be given the opportunity to look at new ways of relating to money. Specific experiential techniques such as psychodrama, guided imagery, meditations, written exercises, and small group process will be used. Many areas will be examined as they relate to money issues such as family of origin, unresolved trauma, loss, shame, emotions, dreams and hopes. By the program's end, participants will have an opportunity to identify a plan of recovery for their money issues. Why is money a focus for therapy? Research has shown that money is among the most common issues thought about, but is rarely talked about on a personal level. Self-worth is often tied to attitudes, beliefs and resulting behaviors around money issues. In addition, money is one of the major areas for conflict in our relationships. We know that money is an area of our lives that triggers emotional reaction, and emotions often drive our behaviors, attitudes, and choices about money. For many of us, this can be a negative cycle. The same dynamic cycle, integrated and redirected in a positive way, can be a wonderful enhancement to our life plan. This therapeutic process will allow the opportunity to examine, integrate and regulate ourselves by providing a safe, structured, holistic environment to examine our relationship with money. Who will be facilitating the workshop? Leading the group therapy portion of the program will be experiential therapists from Onsite Workshops’ exceptionally trained clinical staff. In addition, one of the nation’s leading financial planners will be co-leading the workshop in order to best facilitate the integration of money and personal issues. Please be aware that there will be no sales of any particular financial product or service. Will I come away with a specific financial plan for myself? No. The purpose of this workshop is to help you open yourself to your own internal resources; it will help you make choices and get support so that you can put together a financial plan that is congruent with your values, your life circumstances and your dreams when you return home. The therapy will assist in opening you to potential choices and possibilities, less hampered by emotional blocks. Do I currently need to be working with a therapist or a financial planner? It is not necessary to have a therapist or a financial planner before coming to the workshop. We can help you with resources should you need help finding someone in your area to support you when you leave the workshop. If you currently have a therapist, we will ask for input in furthering your therapeutic goals after you sign a release for us to make the request in order to guide you in developing ongoing support for your aftercare plan upon leaving the program. If you do not have a financial planner and need some guidance in finding one, resources will be available. |
